South Africa’s leading beer brand, Carling Black Label, has been around the country challenging students to participate in daring Carling Taste Challenges. The challenges were held to find out who the Ultimate Carling Champion was – a student who could pick out the taste of a 20 awards-winning beer, Carling Black Label, from a line-up of other beers. The competition came to a close on Sunday 10 April and a winning student was revealed.
Johan van der Merwe, from the University of the Free State (UFS), has been named the Ultimate Carling Champion, and has received the keys to his brand new VW Cross Polo. The car hand over was not the only thing Carling Black Label did on the day, they also gave away R50 000 to UFS, van der Merwe’s varsity.
The hand over of the car and the R50 000 took place on Friday 6 May 2011 at De Brug, in front of Tirmeria on the UFS campus. It was an exciting and interactive event with prizes for lots of students. OFM broadcasted live from the event.
The UFS rugby team (Shimlas), their mascot and cheerleaders represented their varsity and stood in support of their champion, Johan van der Merwe, as he collected his new car keys and the money for UFS.
